The smallest, most compact plant of the Bidens range, ‘Mini Bee' bears an abundance of single, bronze-red blooms touches of golden highlights on fern-like foliage from late Winter in warmer climates through until the hot days of Summer arrive. In cooler areas they will perform best in the warmer months.
In gardens, Bidens ‘Mini Bee' is ideal for planting towards the front of beds. A mass planting looks stunning with little effort, although are equally as striking planted as a low filler amongst other plants or along paths to define edges. The compact, trailing habit of Bidens make this plant perfect for planting along terraced gardens or hanging pots in sunny spots.
Bidens are easy to grow and maintain in full sun. Whether in garden soil to which you have added some fertiliser, or in premium potting mix, Bidens prefer to be kept moist and drain freely. Prune after each flower flush to extend flowering time, or when your plant gets too tall or leggy, to where the leaves are still green and healthy. After pruning, applying well-balanced fertiliser as a top dressing and watering well will help your Bidens 'Mini Bee' spring back. In the heat of Summer, flowers will decrease in size.
Bidens are widely spread natives from the open grasslands of the African, Asian and American tropics. As a native plant it has little merit. Breeders living in Switzerland were taken with plants of Bidens ferulifolia they saw growing in the US and Mexico. After collecting several superior strains, they began breeding for compact habit, long flowering period and larger flower.
