Gauras have gained worldwide popularity not only because they are so pretty on a breezy, sunny day in the garden, but also because they are so easy to grow. ‘Lillipop Soda Pop' holds its place as a larger Gaura with tall stems of bright white bright flowers sailing in the breeze above fresh green foliage.
Gauras are lovely along a sunny fence, in garden beds, and in pots on patios, terraces and balconies. A small pot of a single Gaura Lillipop 'Soda Pop' is a delight by a garden setting, and draws the eye in combination plantings when placed in the background of medium pots, or midground of large pots. Fresh cut flowers placed in little vases make for whimsical posies indoors.
Basic care for Gaura will give you many years of pleasure. After preparing your garden soil or premium potting mix, plant your Gaura and water in well, not forgetting to mulch away from the stems. Very little water is needed once established in a garden bed, but always keep moist but well-drained even when established in containers. Remove spent flowers regularly to keep your Gaura looking its best, but be ready for it to look a little shabby after several months of heavy flowering, at which point it is time for a heavy prune. Remove all the top growth off leaving the crown, which may seem drastic, and will give wonderful results when you apply a balanced fertiliser before watering in lightly.
Gauras come to us from the plains of North America, Gaura lindheimeri, is native from Louisiana to Texas and Gaura coccinea, native from South Dakota to Mexico. Breeding between these two species was done over several years by Edward Bunker at Redland Bay in Queensland. The plant desired was one that was more dwarf and compact with the ability to flower heavily and for most of the year. ‘Lillipop Pink’(PBR) was the first in the series and has found success as a gardener’s favourite worldwide. From this parentage, Gaura ‘Lillipop Soda Pop' was born and now forms part of the Lillipop family with ‘Lillipop Pink’(PBR) and ‘Lillipop Blush’(PBR).
