Description

Grevilleas are Australian through and through and found all over the continent in a stunning array of colour and habit: from low, spreading groundcovers to the towering Grevillea robusta, or Silky Oak. Among the multitude of species, natural hybrids, and cultivars, Grevillea ‘Dorothy Gordon’(PBR) stands out with exceptional, large, purple to mauve pink flowers bursting from, bronze foliage. Growing up to three metres in good conditions, ‘Dorothy Gordon’(PBR) is a treasured feature plant with a compact growth habit, which helps shelter the native Australian wildlife that feed on the nectar-laden blooms.

Grevillea ‘Dorothy Gordon’(PBR) has been granted the status of Plant Breeder Rights (PBR) as indicated by the (PBR).

Uses

‘Dorothy Gordon’(PBR) is a beautiful plant for sunny gardens. Light shade is tolerable although flowering will not be as heavy. ‘Dorothy Gordon’(PBR) can be used as a tall shrub border or informal hedge if you trim a few times a year to maintain leafiness to the size and shape you need. Drought tolerant but also does well in coastal regions.

Both the flowers and foliage make beautiful floral arrangements as they last very well for several days.

Care

Most soil types are suitable for ‘Dorothy Gordon’(PBR). Keep a good layer of mulch away from the trunk and out to the drip line after planting to cool the soil, conserve moisture and help your shrub to establish. Once established, watering is generally not necessary until dry periods hit, which is when an occasional deep watering will help. Prune two or even three times a year.  In late Spring and Autumn, apply a quality, slow-release fertiliser designed for Australian native plants to keep Grevillea ‘Dorothy Gordon’(PBR) at her beautiful best.

Story

This outstanding Grevillea was selected by the Directors of Myall Park Botanic Garden (Glenmorgan, Queensland) and honours Dorothy Gordon, a renowned watercolour artist and wife of Dave Gordon. Myall Park Botanic Garden Ltd is a non-profit company owned and operated by a Board of Honorary Directors.  The plant was selected from a batch of self-sown seedlings at Myall Park.
