The Hemerocallis Echo series of dwarf daylilies are selected for their large flowers on compact plants and for their ability to re-bloom after the main flowering in spring. The Echo series are among the toughest plants and the easiest to grow, heat tolerant, drought tolerant, wet-weather tolerant. With their showy re-blooming day after day from Spring to early Autumn, and evergreen foliage in warm climates, Hemerocallis are a perfect perennial.
The flowers of 'Aztec Gold' are approximately 9cm across and a rich, solid gold on stems around 40-45cm. They open to the sun one morning, and by the next have withered away to be replaced day after day by multitudes more.
Hemerocallis Echo are fabulous when mass-planted in either one or a myriad of colour and are easy to intersperse throughout a mixed garden with other perennials, shrubs, groundcovers, or grasses. Their compact form and outstanding ability to re-bloom on and off throughout Spring and Summer make them excellent for feature pots in your garden, particularly in prominent, sunny positions where their vibrant colour can be most appreciated.
Buds and flowers are edible and can be added to salads, used as garnishes, or placed on special occasion cakes for a stunning effect.
Daylilies do best in full sun but will perform in filtered light. Prepare the garden bed well, working in plenty of animal manure or compost. After planting, water well and mulch the bed to conserve moisture and to control weed growth. Once established, Hemerocallis Echo need very little supplementary watering, and will quickly grow each Spring. Occasional fertilising after a bloom flush is beneficial. Most cultivars benefit from being lifted and divided every three or four years.
In cold climates, the plant will enter dormancy. Remove the iris-like foliage when it dies off and your Hemerocallis Echo will bloom again in Spring.
Hemerocallis originate from Asia, particularly China and Japan, and have been extensively hybridised by breeders around the world. As a result, there are tens of thousands of named varieties and a dizzying array of choices. The ‘Echo’ series compact growth habit, easy grow qualities and large flowers will create long lasting colour for sunny gardens.
