Cold weather heralds masses of tall, blue flowers swaying above soft, platinum green foliage come springtime.
Lavender 'Pure Platinum' is compact, hardy, and floriferous with soft, smooth, platinum-green leaves tough enough to withstand hot sun and long winters. The colder the better for an abundance of tall, blue flower spikes in the Spring.
Lavenders can be used in herb gardens or cottage gardens in full sun and free-flowing fresh, dry air. The compact size of 'Pure Platinum' loans it very well for garden borders, mass-planted swathes blue and silver, and patio pots in sunny courtyards. Dried lavender is of course an age-old favourite and so easy when masses are at hand to tie, hang, and air in open spaces.
Lavenders are easy to grow when the basic requirements are provided: full sun, good air flow, average soil that drains well, and minimal watering. If mass-planting, space at least 50cm apart to ensure air flow. For the same reason, container planting is best done solo, rather than in combination with other plants.
'Pure Platinum' also needs several months of very cold weather in order to fully bloom. Remove spent flowers as needed, and when flowering is finished in warming weather, prune one third or even up to one half of the plant to help it rejuvenate. Apply slow-release fertiliser after pruning, and water in well.
‘Pure Platinum’ is selected from breeding Lavendula X intermedia hybrids, which in its turn was selected from breeding L. angustifolia with L. latifolia, both native to Mediterranean regions.
