Nemesias are among the showiest of garden plants, easy to grow with a long flowering habit. Nemesia Innocence ‘White’ features masses of fragrant clear white flowers with soft pale-yellow centres for many months of the year, a great choice for garden beds and pots.
Prefers a full sun position but will grow well in part shade, frost tolerant. Hanging baskets, window boxes, feature pots are all perfect for Nemesia, particularly in warm climates with high humidity. In the garden landscape, plant in drifts of colour, use as a low-maintenance filler, or a bright, aromatic border plant.
Plant into sunny, well-lit garden beds with well-tilled soil to which compost has been added. Likewise, when planting into pots, use the best quality potting mix you can buy and some compost or slow-release fertiliser at potting. Keep the soil or mix moist and ensure that it drains well. In warmer climates with high humidity, Nemesia do best in pots with good air-flow.
Nemesias are self-cleaning, so deadheading is unnecessary. However, the flower-bearing stems tend to bend once they reach a certain height, and therefore Nemesia do benefit from pruning. Cut the too-long stems back to their base above the auxiliary shoots, and within two weeks a new burst of colour appears.
In the height of Summer when night temperatures rise above 23 degrees, Aromance 'Boysenberry' may cease flowering. In this event, a light trim does wonders to increase branching, which will result in more flowers once the temperatures start to fall again.
A yearly application of fertiliser or compost on garden beds and regular fertilization of plants in pots will help ensure the best possible performance.
All Nemesias originate in Africa. Nemesia fruiticans from whence the Karoos are bred are from South Africa and as the name suggests they come from the Karoo, the high plain around Johannesburg and Pretoria.
