An Australian native shrub with felty, green foliage and a creamy white edge, producing tall spires of pale blue to violet flowers from Spring through Autumn.
Plectranthus 'Blue Spires' is a compact shrub plant with a tidy, clumping habit of 40cm height to 30cm wide. 'Blue Spires' is heat tolerant, waterwise once established, and will grow under many light conditions from full sun right through to full shade.
'Blue Spires' offers lovely foliage interest with its soft spearmint-green leaves edged in creamy white, and bears flower spikes in pale blue to violet on sturdy stems.
'Blue Spires' is a versatile landscaping plant, adding contrasting colour and texture in a range of garden styles. Its adaptability to both direct light and full shade is perfect for mass-planting as an understory for trees or taller shrubs, or used to edge and border garden plots. The compact, clumping habit of 'Blue Spires' is also perfect for container planting in courtyards and patios.
As for all Plectranthus, 'Blue Spires' are easy to grow and need little attention. Prepare the garden bed or potting mix by digging in compost or other humus material. Mulch after planting and water in well. In containers, a little extra care is needed to apply liquid or slow-release fertiliser twice a year, and to ensure that the root zone does not dry out completely. Pruning is best done in warmer months if needed but shaping with a light trim can be done at any time.
Plectranthus parviflorus is an east coast Australian native and ‘Blue Spires’ was bred by a Queensland native plant enthusiast. It was selected for its variegated foliage and compact neat growth.
