Blazing, scarlet-orange bells are borne on clustering flower spikes above this compact, evergreen garden shrub.
Tecoma ‘Bells of Fire’ is a versatile, low maintenance, waterwise shrub that flowers in blazing scarlet, orange, slightly fragrant, blooms that flower non-stop all season. Breeding has enhanced the key attributes of this plant.
Tecoma 'Bells of Fire' is a hardy plant that performs well and grows easily in any garden that has room for an easy-care performer. 'Bells of Fire' is also suitable for larger pots.
Plant into sunny, fertile gardens with good drainage and mulch well to maintain moisture levels as it settles in. Keep moist by watering regularly to maintain the new growth which bears the spikes of bell flowers. Regularly apply a well-balanced fertiliser during the growing months. In early Spring, 'Bells of Fire' benefits from a hard prune, and container plants should also be re-potted with new, fertile mix.
Tecoma ‘Bells of Fire’ was selected from a range of seedlings collected from seed from Peru where the plant grows in nature. Some breeding from the selected seedlings over several years resulted in ‘Bells of Fire’ which were selected as they flowered more often with larger flower heads and deeper colour than the original native species.
The species Tecoma stans with common name Yellow Bells is restricted in New South Wales and Queensland. As a result, hybrid forms of Tecoma stans such as 'Bells of Fire' are also restricted and cannot be sold in either state.
