Description

Unlike most Verbena with a trailing or spreading habit, Verbena 'Meteor Shower' is upright owing to its V. bonariensis parentage. 'Meteor Shower' is a particularly hardy, vigorous, and compact shrub with dark green, textured leaves. Dense clusters of dainty lilac-purple flowers shoot tall above the foliage on sturdy stems from early Spring through to late Autumn, creating an airy form that attracts butterflies and other pollinators, and all year round in warmer climates.

Uses

The height and compact, manageable habit of Verbena 'Meteor Shower' is ideal for adding colour and structure in landscapes and combination container plantings. Try as a garden bed back drop in front of a picket fence, or to create height in the centre or back of combination container plantings. With an exceptionally long blooming period, 'Meteor Shower' is perfect to add to mixed borders, or mass-planted in a landscape garden.  Enjoy as cut flower or dried flower.

Care

Position in full sun. Verbena 'Meteor Shower' grows well in most soil types but does need good drainage. When planting in the garden, dig compost into the soil. When planting into containers, use a high-quality potting mix. Apply slow-release fertiliser upon planting, and water in well. Once established, allow the soil to dry out between watering. Verbena can tolerate some drought, but does best in slightly moist soil, so watering more frequently during dry periods recommended.

Apply a water-soluble fertiliser regularly during the growing season for more flowers. Deadheading is not necessary but will keep 'Meteor Shower' looking tidier. Cut spent flower clusters back to the next auxiliary bud or flower stem. When the entire stem is spent, cut back at its base in the foliage. Pruning can be done at any time to shape but apply fertiliser and water to help growth. In cold climates, Verbena may survive Winter if pruned right back before frosts. In warm climates, 'Meteor Shower' will behave like a perennial.

Wear gloves & wash hands after gardening.
