Agapanthus 'Amethyst' is the first to bloom again and again throughout the year with its main period occurring in November. Its large blue flower heads grow up to one metre and have a darker mid-petal stripe on each flower.
Agapanthus are used extensively in garden beds and borders. In parks and commercial settings long swathes of them are often seen defining a landscape plan as a mass-planting and are equally lovely when planted singly. Sunny positions are best, but Agapanthus thrive even as under-story plants where tree roots are competition. More attention in their early life to keep them moist and growing is necessary when planted in competitive situations. Flowers are great cut for use in interior floral arrangements.
Agapanthus flower beautifully in sunny aspects. In shade the flowering is nowhere near as good but the plants with their distinctive leaves earn their place. Agapanthus are low maintenance once established and can tolerate reasonably cold weather. They grow and flower best in fertile, loamy gardens but can tolerate most soil types, and benefit from natural fertiliser applied sparingly once or twice a year. Pest and disease are minimal problems.
Coming from Southern Africa Agapanthus praecox grows into an emerald green leafed clump which bears many flower heads in season. 'Amethyst ' is one of a large number of horticultural hybrids have been developed over the years from Agapanthus praecox. These are widely grown in gardens everywhere. The breeder of Agapanthus ‘Amethyst’ is from South Africa and markets his breeding through Keith Kirsten Horticulture, a well-known name in the horticultural world.
